Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Company (Tsuneishi) is undertaking a project to modernize its supply chain and inventory management systems, which have been in place for over 15 years. This project is designed using artificial intelligence and two young engineers named Tatsuya Kurotobi and Goki Matsuo, who have undergone three months of specialized training with the Japanese technology company Scalar.

Project Goals and Challenges

The current supply chain and inventory management systems at Tsuneishi have become a complex network due to continuous changes, making maintenance and modification costly. Instead of using traditional software development methods, the company has decided to utilize artificial intelligence to analyze the existing source code and identify relationships between systems. This approach helps Tsuneishi design new software that is easily maintainable and modifiable.

The modernization project includes replacing the current architecture with cloud-based microservices supported by API management using Kong Konnect and data integration with ScalarDB. Tsuneishi anticipates that the use of artificial intelligence for analysis and design will reduce development efforts by over 70%, although this figure remains an internal estimate.

Future Strategies

Satoshi Mori, the CEO and Chief Information Strategy Officer of Tsuneishi, has stated that bringing development in-house will reduce reliance on external technology suppliers. The long-term goal of this project is to launch a shared digital platform across the group's shipbuilding operations in Japan, China, and the Philippines.

With this initiative, Tsuneishi aims to increase efficiency and reduce software development costs, hoping to achieve a significant digital transformation in the shipbuilding industry through the use of artificial intelligence. This move not only helps improve internal processes but also provides Tsuneishi with an opportunity to operate more competitively in the global market.
