ONE and ClassNK have commenced research to assess the effectiveness of Roll Reduction Tanks (RDT) on container ships with the aim of enhancing safety and reliability in maritime transport. This research seeks to provide practical insights into the performance of RDTs and a better understanding of their efficiency in real-world operations using measured data from ships and numerical simulations.
Purpose of the Research and Its Importance
Roll reduction tanks are designed to reduce the rolling motion of ships through controlled movement of fluids within the tank. This technology has traditionally been used in passenger ships and research vessels, but its application in container ships has increased in recent years. Reducing roll is particularly important for large container ships, as excessive rolling can increase the forces exerted on containers and their securing systems. Effective roll reduction can help make ship operations and cargo transport safer.

Operational Data and Technical Analyses
Despite the growing use of RDTs in container ships, their performance has primarily been evaluated through model testing and numerical simulations. Comprehensive validation based on actual measurements under operational and marine conditions remains limited. To fill this gap, ONE will provide operational data collected from its ships, and ClassNK will leverage its extensive experience in testing, numerical simulations, and technical analyses to evaluate this data. The goal of this collaboration is to create a clearer understanding of RDT performance on large container ships under real operational conditions.
Kumi Miyashita, a representative from ClassNK, stated: "We are pleased to collaborate with ONE to validate the effectiveness of RDTs based on data obtained from actual ship operations. By combining comprehensive measured data and numerical analyses, we aim to enhance the safety and efficiency of ship operations." Masaharu Urabe, Vice President of Global Ship Operations at ONE, also expressed: "We are excited to work with ClassNK on this important research. By combining ON's operational data and ClassNK's technical analyses, we aim to create a practical method for evaluating the effectiveness of RDTs under real conditions. We believe that the insights gained from this research will contribute to safer ship operations and improved container loading efficiency."
ONE and ClassNK will continue their collaboration in sharing operational data and technical expertise to foster innovation and enhance safety, reliability, and efficiency in container transport and the maritime industry.
