COSCO Shipping Holdings Co. achieved a revenue of 17.2 billion yuan ($2.6 billion) in the third quarter of 2023, reflecting an 81% increase. This growth was primarily due to geopolitical disruptions and changes in trade routes, which led to increased vessel utilization and higher container rates.

Revenue Growth and Contributing Factors

COSCO's net revenue has significantly increased compared to last year. This increase has occurred as a result of substantial changes in international shipping routes, particularly in trans-Pacific routes. This positive trend is expected to continue and impact the performance of other major shipping companies as well.

Impact on the Global Supply Chain

Global supply chains remained under pressure during this quarter, as vessels had to reroute to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the Middle East region. These reroutes have led to an increase in Spot rates for 40-foot containers, nearing the highest levels in two years. Data from the Drewry Global Container Index indicates that these rate levels have remained stable throughout most of the quarter.

Analysts believe that Spot container rates will remain at these levels in the near future. In particular, trans-Pacific Spot rates have significantly increased due to resilient trade flows from the United States.

Outlook for Other Companies

COSCO's strong performance is a sign of a fruitful season for some of its global competitors. Revenue estimates for major European companies such as A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S and Hapag-Lloyd AG have consistently risen since July. Additionally, new forecasts from Nippon Yusen KK in Japan have exceeded analysts' expectations, while Evergreen Marine Corp in Taiwan expects to report its best financial quarter since 2024.

Finally, the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach set new loading records in September, managing a total of 2.04 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). This increase is attributed to strong imports and changes in trade patterns.
