China's petroleum product exports in September 2023 saw a significant increase, reaching 7.16 million tons. This amount represents a 39.4% growth compared to the same period last year. This increase has been particularly noticeable in diesel exports, which reached their highest level since February 2023 this month.

Reasons for the Increase in Exports

The global fuel shortage due to ongoing wars and conflicts in the Middle East and Russia has posed challenges to the global market. In response to this shortage, China, one of the main exporters of petroleum products in Asia, has managed to achieve this increase by easing the export restrictions it had imposed since March 2023. The country reduced parts of these restrictions in mid-July, contributing to the increase in exports.

Diesel, which is one of the most important fuels in transportation and industries, was exported at 1.85 million tons in September, representing a 262.3% increase compared to September last year. This figure reflects the highest monthly diesel export level for China this year.

Situation of Gasoline and Aviation Fuel Exports

While diesel exports have seen a significant increase, gasoline exports continue to experience a downward trend. China exported 620,000 tons of gasoline in September, indicating a 4.1% decrease compared to last year. This decline has been even more pronounced over the nine-month period, with gasoline exports from the beginning of the year reaching 3.04 million tons, showing a 51.9% drop.

In the aviation fuel sector, China's exports have also increased, reaching 1.94 million tons in September, which is 16.7% more than last year. This increase in exports, alongside a decrease in liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports, which reached 5.61 million tons in September, indicates significant changes in China's energy market.

Despite these increases, China's overall export performance in the first nine months of 2023 remains lower than last year. The country's petroleum product exports from January to September reached 41.4 million tons, which is 3.7% less than the same period last year. These statistics indicate that the global fuel market is influenced by geopolitical developments and export restrictions.
