China has successfully conducted its first commercial green ammonia ship-to-ship loading operation. This operation took place on October 13 and 14, 2023, near Zhoushan, transferring 1,000 tons of fuel to the Mineral Europa ship owned by the Belgian company CMB.TECH. The Mineral Europa is the world's first cargo ship powered by ammonia.

Loading Operation Details

This ship-to-ship loading was carried out using a specialized loading vessel named Shenghang Yongle. The Mineral Europa, which has a gross weight of 210,000 tons, has recently been delivered and is ready to commence its commercial operations. The ammonia fuel used in this operation was produced using renewable electricity at the green hydrogen and ammonia project of China Energy Engineering in Jilin Province.

After production, the fuel was transported from Nanjing to Zhoushan, where the loading operation took place. This operation is a significant step in establishing a commercial supply chain between the production of renewable fuel and its delivery to ocean-going vessels.

Future Outlook and Benefits of the Marine Loading Model

Li Jingguang, head of the hydrogen section at China Energy Engineering, highlighted the benefits of the ship-to-ship marine loading model and predicted that in the future, loading volumes could reach 2,000 or even 3,000 tons. This loading model can help improve efficiency and reduce costs in the supply of renewable fuels.

Chinese maritime officials closely monitored this operation and implemented specific safety measures to manage this toxic and hazardous fuel. These actions were essential to ensure the safety and success of the loading operation.

After completing the loading operation, the Mineral Europa will head towards the Pacific Ocean and Australia to continue its commercial activities. CMB.TECH expects to add 21 ammonia-powered ships to its fleet by 2029, which includes 18 cargo ships.
