California has officially banned the use of existing oil infrastructure in state waters to support new oil drilling projects with the passage of a new law called AB 1448. This law, which will take effect in January 2027, is a significant step towards protecting California's coasts from federal plans to expand oil drilling.
Opposition to federal plans
This decision comes as the federal government under Donald Trump seeks to issue new permits for oil and gas drilling in the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. However, California and environmental groups have strongly reacted to these plans using legal strategies and defensive tactics.

Environmental advocacy groups like Oceana and the Center for Biological Diversity have supported this law and emphasized its importance. For example, Linda Krop, senior advisor at the Center for Environmental Defense, stated that California cannot allow outdated infrastructure to be used for new drilling.
Economic and environmental consequences
The history of oil drilling in California, especially along the state’s coasts, has had many negative impacts and consequences. Incidents like the oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara and recent pipeline leaks have caused extensive damage to the environment and the local economy.
With the passage of law AB 1448, California has clearly stated that it seeks to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Joel Gordon, campaign director at Oceana, has also emphasized the importance of this law, stating that the state of California is looking to protect its coasts from federal oil drilling.
Additionally, this law is seen as a response to public concerns, given recent polls showing that 63 percent of Californians oppose oil drilling off the state’s coasts. This action not only reflects increasing public awareness of the dangers posed by oil drilling but also represents a fundamental step towards protecting California's environment and natural resources.
