Brazil has introduced 501 new blocks in its Equatorial Margin for oil and gas exploration. These blocks have been defined by the regulatory body ANP and cover an area of nearly 380,000 square kilometers.

Details of the New Blocks

The blocks are located in 11 new exploratory sectors, including the Foz do Amazonas, Pará-Maranhão, Barreirinhas, Ceará, and Potiguar areas. The water depth of these blocks exceeds 3,000 meters and has been classified as a new frontier for exploration by ANP.

This action follows the extension of Brazil's continental shelf, which was approved by the United Nations Commission for approximately continental borders in March 2025. ANP has emphasized that this decision does not mean the automatic entry of new blocks into Brazil's permanent licensing system, and each area requires further technical and regulatory reviews to be prepared for bidding proposals.

Impact on Existing Contracts and Social-Environmental Assessment

The new area does not affect existing exploration contracts. ANP has also conducted social-environmental assessments, including reviews of protected areas, and found no overlaps or proximity issues that would hinder the establishment of proposed sectors. This agency has also adjusted the borders of three existing sectors in the Foz do Amazonas and Pará-Maranhão areas in line with the expansion of the continental shelf.

This decision was announced on the same day that Petrobras reported a new oil discovery in the exploratory well Morpho in the Foz do Amazonas area. This Brazilian oil giant encountered another oil layer while drilling deeper sections of the well, following the initial discovery of hydrocarbons in August.

Future Plans of Petrobras

Petrobras has positioned the Equatorial Margin as a key part of its exploration program with the aim of replacing its reserves in the coming decade. The company’s plan for the years 2026 to 2030 includes drilling 15 exploratory wells in the Equatorial Margin, which constitutes more than a third of the 40 wells in the overall exploration program.

Separately, ANP approved 86 Equatorial Margin blocks in June for potential inclusion in future licensing rounds. These areas still need to undergo environmental approvals and other regulatory permits before being offered to oil companies.
