ABB has been selected as the electrification partner for the Ferrar Hypersail project. This collaboration allows ABB to apply its expertise in electrical technology and advanced marine systems. Ferrar Hypersail is a fully-filling refrigerated boat measuring 100 feet in length that operates on renewable energy.

Objective of the Ferrar Hypersail Project

The goal of Ferrar Hypersail is to enhance sustainable marine performance by combining speed, safety, and energy generation in harsh marine conditions. This boat is designed to operate in one of the most challenging marine environments and has the capability to manage and generate energy under tough conditions.

ABB's Expertise in the Project

With over 25 years of experience in DC technology and holding more than 700 patents in this field, ABB will provide services to Ferrar Hypersail. The company will assist Ferrar Hypersail in energy management, marine electrical systems, energy storage, and smart monitoring.

Ferrar Hypersail offers ABB a high-performance environment to demonstrate how advanced electrification, DC architectures, and smart energy management can enhance resilience and efficiency in harsh marine conditions. These needs include balancing renewable generation, storage, monitoring, and real-time energy distribution, which are crucial in the development of next-generation industrial microgrids.

ABB's Role in Advancing the Project

Giampiero Frisio, head of ABB's electrification division, stated: "Ferrar Hypersail provides ABB with a unique platform to showcase how we collaborate with partners to push the boundaries of DC technology." He added that this boat is designed to operate in conditions that are difficult to compare with industrial challenges.

Enrico Vettolini, project leader of Ferrar Hypersail, also highlighted the importance of this collaboration, saying: "Hypersail operates entirely on renewable energy and must be self-sufficient for weeks in the toughest marine environments. Having ABB's expertise is a valuable operational advantage for the project."

DC Architecture and Its Benefits

The DC architecture of Ferrar Hypersail will function as a self-sufficient high-performance microgrid. These systems operate at 48 volts and 800 volts DC, generating, storing, and managing energy for navigation, foil controls, safety systems, and propulsion.

ABB's team will assist Ferrar Hypersail in integrating DC systems, real-time monitoring, smart energy distribution, and resilience at sea. Insights gained from this project will be instrumental in developing advanced energy systems for various industries, including marine transportation, data centers, and renewable energy infrastructures.
