Iran's economy faced a 10.1% decline in the first quarter of 2023. This decrease clearly indicates serious challenges in various economic sectors of the country, especially in the oil and gas sector, which has suffered the most with a negative growth of 26.4%.
Negative Effects on Economic Sectors
Neglecting the economic situation and lack of activity in various industries can have negative effects beyond economic statistics. Even without accounting for oil, the country's economic growth has recorded a negative 4.6%. In this context, the industrial and mining, services, and construction sectors are also on a downward path.

Positive Growth in Agriculture and Future Concerns
Amid these declines, the agricultural sector has been the only sector with positive growth, recording a 2.3% increase. However, another concerning point is the gross fixed capital formation, which has decreased by 8.4%. This trend indicates a reduction in the capacity to create new production and the gradual wear and tear of equipment in the future.
A 35.7% decline in exports has put additional pressure on production enterprises, meaning shrinking sales markets and reduced foreign exchange revenues. This recessionary chain can lead to decreased employment and household incomes, ultimately putting pressure on household purchasing power.
The Cycle of Recession and Its Consequences
Declining production puts pressure on enterprises' revenues, and businesses may limit hiring or developmental activities to reduce costs. This leads to the creation of a negative cycle where decreased production results in reduced business revenues, pressure on employment and household incomes, decreased consumption, and ultimately further production decline.
If this trend continues, Iran's economy may enter future years with lower production capacity, weaker enterprises, limited job opportunities, and lower household purchasing power. Therefore, the main concern is that a short-term economic shock could gradually erode the production and income-generating capacities of the economy.
