The oil tanker ‘Sibu 1’, which is under U.S. sanctions, has been freed after being hijacked on August 20 by Somali pirates. This tanker, flying the Eritrean flag, has recently been rescued from the clutches of six pirates who were controlling it.

Details of the Rescue Operation

The Puntland regional navy in Somalia announced that this rescue operation was successfully carried out on September 25. Mohamed Jama, a commander in the Puntland navy, said: "This was an anti-piracy operation that started two days ago and is still ongoing. The ship has been freed and the pirates are in our custody." This action reflects the ongoing efforts of the regional navy to combat the rising piracy off the coast of Somalia.

Background of Sanctions and Piracy

The oil tanker ‘Sibu 1’ was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department last December due to its role in helping Iranian oil products evade U.S. sanctions. In recent years, piracy off the coast of Somalia has again become a serious problem. According to data from the International Maritime Organization and UKMTO reports, ‘Sibu 1’ is at least the thirteenth vessel to be attacked in this region this year.

Piracy off the coast of Somalia between 2008 and 2014 led to a security crisis in the western Indian Ocean, costing the global economy billions of dollars and resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars paid as ransom. It appears that with increasing tensions in surrounding areas and the weakness of naval forces, piracy is on the rise again.
