The U.S. Coast Guard (US Coast Guard) intervened medically for one of the crew members of the oil tanker Ocean Gladiator on October 8, 2026. This tanker, flying the flag of the United States, was on a long journey from Baltimore to Manila when it encountered a medical issue.
Medical Issue and Request for Intervention
On Tuesday, the Ocean Gladiator was passing south of Hawaii when one of the crew members requested intervention from the Coast Guard due to a medical problem. However, the tanker was over 540 miles away from the Big Island of Hawaii, making immediate assistance impossible.
Rescue Operation and Patient Transfer
The Coast Guard's search and rescue center in Honolulu planned to dispatch a helicopter to the location once the tanker reached the flight range. In the meantime, the crew of the tanker monitored the patient's condition and sent reports on his status.
On Wednesday morning, the Ocean Gladiator approached within 90 miles of the shores of the Big Island. A crew member from the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter was dispatched to the location and carefully landed a rescuer on the ship's deck. The patient was transferred to a stretcher with the help of the crew and taken towards the shore.
Unusual Cargo of the Tanker
Video footage released from the operation shows that the Ocean Gladiator had an unusual cargo for this trip: two Marine Protector class patrol boats from the U.S. Coast Guard, which had been prepared and repainted for transfer to the Philippine Coast Guard, along with a fuel barge. The Coast Guard is gradually retiring Marine Protector class boats, with some designated for transfer to the Philippines.
The Ocean Gladiator was built in 2010 and registered in the United States in 2020. This tanker, with a capacity of 17,000 tons equivalent to 1,000 TEU, is typically leased to the U.S. Navy for annual supply missions to McMurdo Station in Antarctica. AIS data indicates that this vessel has continued its commercial journey.
