The US Coast Guard confirmed that it has recently intercepted several oil tankers bound for Cuba. Last summer, two ships were specifically targeted, and this action is in line with the renewed sanctions imposed during Donald Trump's presidency. These sanctions have been re-enforced following the authorization of some emergency oil shipments earlier this year.

Details of the Ship Interceptions

In a statement from the Coast Guard, it was announced that a container ship named "Grace" was intercepted in early September and transferred to the port of Progreso, Mexico. The Mexican Navy found large amounts of fuel in the ship's ballast tanks after inspecting the vessel. This situation highlights serious environmental risks associated with improper fuel loading in ship tanks.

The Coast Guard also mentioned the interception of a smaller ship named "Jaira Provider" that was transporting unauthorized fuel to Cuba last summer. This ship, described as substandard, was built in 1978 and has a capacity of 2,647 tons. Reports indicate that the ship had 210,000 gallons of fuel at the time of interception.

Economic and Political Consequences

Cuba has faced serious energy supply issues since the closure of fuel import routes from Venezuela earlier this year, with frequent reports of power outages and fuel shortages in the country. In late March, the United States appeared to ease its sanctions and allowed an oil tanker carrying emergency fuel from Russia to reach Cuba. However, following reports of the Coast Guard tracking and approaching other tankers, efforts to send fuel to the island were halted.

The Cuban Foreign Minister recently described these sanctions as an aggressive act during a United Nations General Assembly, emphasizing the severity of the pressures imposed by the United States. While talks between the United States and Cuba to resolve these disputes have made little progress, the US government seems determined to change the regime through economic efforts.
