Unauthorized access to the propulsion system of the VL Prosperity oil tanker this summer has raised serious concerns about cyber threats in the maritime industry. This tanker, which was heading towards the Texas coast, was illegally accessed in its digital system, which could have dire consequences.

Incident Details

Investigations show that hackers were able to temporarily access the propulsion system of this tanker. Authorities are still examining how this breach occurred and the identity of the hackers. It is still unclear how long the hackers had access to this system and what controls they had over the vessel.

Infiltration of a ship's propulsion system is a rare and extremely dangerous security breach that requires immediate attention from authorities. As a result of this incident, U.S. officials boarded the VL Prosperity tanker in August. This tanker is so large that its length exceeds that of the Chrysler Building and its width is equivalent to that of a football field.

Security Concerns

FBI officials stated that there are currently no reports of operational disruptions, vessel instability, physical danger to the crew, or environmental impacts. However, the possibility that hackers could remotely take control of the operational system of a large oil tanker has raised serious concerns for U.S. military and intelligence officials.

According to Alex Sukhanov, a maritime cybersecurity expert, confirmed breaches of ship systems are rare but can have significant impacts. He emphasized that "these are the largest moving objects in the world that carry the global economy" and added that "such unauthorized access should not be allowed".

As of September, U.S. government agencies were tracking cyber threats against nearly 20 vessels worldwide, and the Coast Guard has requested that ships intending to enter U.S. ports notify in advance.

In the event of losing some functionalities of large hazardous material carriers in a cyber attack, this situation has been described as the "worst-case scenario". Nevertheless, most vessels have the capability to utilize other systems that allow the crew to continue operations.

The VL Prosperity tanker remains anchored near the Galveston coast, and officials are closely monitoring its status.
