The U.S. government, led by Donald Trump, the President of this country, called for the complete economic isolation of Iran during the United Nations General Assembly on September 22, 2026. This statement was issued while Iran had previously hinted at the possibility of reviving negotiations to end its nearly seven-month war.

Iran's Condition for Reopening the Strait of Hormuz

A senior Iranian official announced that his country could reopen the Strait of Hormuz for shipping in the Persian Gulf within seven days if Tehran's demands for reducing military pressure and lifting the maritime blockade are met. This official added that Tehran has conveyed its latest proposal to Washington through intermediaries.

Trump's Position at the UN General Assembly

In his speech, Trump showed no signs of readiness for compromise, stating, "I urge all countries to help enforce the complete economic isolation of Iran." He also expressed belief that an agreement between the two countries would be signed after the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Trump further referenced his Arab counterparts in the Gulf, stating that these countries are also seeking to revive shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz, which previously accounted for the passage of one-fifth of the world's oil and gas, is now affected by military conflicts.

Meanwhile, news sources reported the resumption of operations in Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, which could lead to the resumption of oil exports from the port of Yanbu. This pipeline is Saudi Arabia's main route to circumvent disruptions caused by the war in the Strait of Hormuz.

Economic and Security Consequences

Recent attacks on Saudi oil facilities and the advance of Houthi forces in Yemen have raised concerns about the security of shipping in the region. In this context, diesel prices in Europe and the United States have reached their highest levels, as wars in Iran and Ukraine have severely reduced exports from some of the largest producers.

Currently, given recent developments, there are many questions regarding the future of negotiations between Iran and the U.S. as well as the security of shipping in the Persian Gulf. Some sources have reported Qatar's proposal to create a framework for integrating Iran and the Arab Gulf countries into a common security architecture. This proposal has also been submitted for consideration and evaluation by Iran.
