Greg Stanton, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ABS, has stated that nuclear energy has the potential to fundamentally change the economics of commercial shipping, from ship design to long-term operational costs. This research, which examines ship designs, propulsion systems, and operational conditions, shows how nuclear energy could provide significant economic advantages compared to new ships powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Economic Analysis and New Business Models

The researchers of this study have examined the heavy initial costs of nuclear equipment, but have also emphasized that the ability to design nuclear ships for fuel savings and to create smart business models could lead to major changes in global trade. As ships age over time and are delivered to scrap yards, the question arises whether a million-dollar nuclear engine within a ship could serve as a reusable energy asset, reducing fuel costs over the operational lifespan of the vessel.

Technical Advances and Future Collaborations

Shimphei Hamato, CEO of Blossom Energy, has also emphasized that this study provides a quantitative basis for discussing nuclear propulsion in commercial transport. Blossom Energy has added its HTGR reference design to this study and has announced that it will continue to collaborate with ABS and industry partners to establish the necessary technical and legal infrastructures for the practical application of this technology.

Overall, researchers believe that by changing attitudes towards nuclear reactors and viewing them as long-term energy assets, the economic calculations of nuclear maritime transport will change significantly. This shift could lead to reduced fuel costs and improved efficiency in the maritime transport industry.
