The peak electricity consumption in Yazd province reached 1124 megawatts at 9 PM on June 13, 2023. This increase in electricity consumption indicates the existing challenges in energy management and the imbalance between supply and demand.
Electricity consumption management in Yazd
Mohammad Javad Jalili, the CEO of the Yazd Power Distribution Company, referred to the measures taken to manage electricity consumption, mentioning plans such as replacing swamp cooler motors and encouraging subscribers to install solar panels. Additionally, the "Mahitab" plan aims to reduce network losses, and the "100 Nights, 100 Visits" plan is being implemented to identify and eliminate excess lighting.

Analysis of electricity consumption statistics
Jalili announced that the amount of energy delivered in the first five months of the current year was 3 million 181 thousand 59 megawatt-hours, stating: "Electricity consumption in the industrial sector was about 490 megawatts, in the agricultural sector 60 megawatts, and in the administrative sector 15 megawatts."
Moreover, the total electricity consumption in the administrative, commercial, and residential sectors is estimated to be around 535 megawatts, showing a 2.6 percent increase compared to last year. This increase in consumption poses a serious challenge for electricity supply in the province.
Challenges of self-sufficiency for energy-intensive industries
The CEO of the Yazd Power Distribution Company emphasized Article 4 of the Law on Removing Barriers to the Development of the Electricity Industry, referring to the obligation for energy-intensive industries to establish self-sufficient power plants. Although the total consumption load of energy-intensive industries covered by the Yazd Power Distribution Company is about 200 megawatts, these industries only have about 50 megawatts of internal generators and 9 megawatts of solar power plants.
Jalili noted: "The self-sufficient production of these industries is approximately 59 megawatts, indicating a gap between the internal production capacity and the electricity consumption of energy-intensive industries covered by the Yazd Power Distribution Company." This clearly highlights the need for further investment in renewable energy and capacity building for electricity production in the province.
