The LNG Gate terminal in Rotterdam, Netherlands, has achieved a total capacity of 20 billion cubic meters per year after three years of expansion project, with the launch of a new tank. This project has been implemented to diversify the energy supply of the European continent and strengthen energy security in Northwestern Europe.

Details of the expansion project

The partners of Gate terminal, including Gasunie and Vopak, confirmed that the construction of the fourth LNG tank with a storage capacity of 180,000 cubic meters was completed on time. This tank is set to be operational on October 1, 2026, and will increase storage and gas supply capacity.

Jarmo Stoopman, CEO of Gate terminal, stated: "Gate is increasing its capacity and strengthening its role as a strategic gateway for energy supply to the Netherlands and Northwestern Europe. The ability to supply LNG from various parts of the world helps Europe further diversify its energy supply and strengthen supply security."

Response to the 2022 energy crisis

The decision to construct this additional tank was partially made as a response to the energy crisis in 2022. This expansion adds 4 billion cubic meters of gas supply capacity annually to the total capacity of Gate, bringing the total capacity of this terminal to 20 billion cubic meters per year. The total gas market in the Netherlands is approximately 30 billion cubic meters per year.

The Gate terminal temporarily receives LNG via ship and stores it in liquid form, then prepares it for delivery through the gas transmission network to consumers in the Netherlands and surrounding countries. This expansion helps increase the capacity to supply LNG from various parts of the world.

Additionally, the Gate terminal published a non-binding "expression of interest" on August 31, 2026, to allow market parties to express their interest in future loading capacity at Jetty 5 to facilitate further growth and increased demand for clean marine fuels.
