ABS and the Office of Nuclear Energy of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) signed a memorandum of understanding to advance modern nuclear technology at sea. This agreement focuses on the examination and development of solutions for floating power and nuclear vessels, as well as the establishment of ports, factories, and industrial infrastructure for the construction and maintenance of these technologies.
Key Priorities of the Memorandum of Understanding
The main priorities of this agreement include concept studies and feasibility assessments for floating nuclear power plants and nuclear transport corridors. The agreement also pays attention to developing the shipbuilding sector in the United States that is capable of safely constructing and operating nuclear assets. ABS will also coordinate necessary efforts through the U.S. Marine Innovation Center (USCMI), of which it acts as the secretariat.
Transformation of Nuclear Technology in the Maritime Industry
John McDonald, President and CEO of ABS, stated: "Advanced nuclear technology is moving from the concept stage to application, and the maritime industry must be prepared for it." He also highlighted the importance of this agreement with the Department of Energy, adding that these collaborations can help advance nuclear technology in maritime industries.
The U.S. Department of Energy is recognized as a leader in government initiatives regarding marine nuclear applications. Under this memorandum of understanding, ABS is tasked with managing the Marine Nuclear Applications Group (MNAG) and will provide the necessary technical, regulatory, economic, and political support for concept studies and feasibility assessments. ABS will also collaborate with the Department of Energy to create the necessary inter-agency coordination for developing an efficient marine nuclear sector in the United States.
Potential of Advanced Nuclear Technology
Ted Garrish, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy, stated: "Advanced nuclear technology has the potential to transform the commercial maritime industry and open new markets for American innovation." The collaboration between the Department of Energy and ABS could help explore how to leverage decades of experience to secure next-generation nuclear technologies in the maritime sector.
ABS is at the forefront of efforts to integrate nuclear energy into marine applications and has published the first comprehensive classification rules for floating nuclear power plants. The company has also issued initial licenses for a range of nuclear projects.
