Seatrium, the Singaporean shipbuilding group, has received a new contract from Karpowership for the conversion of an LNG tanker to FSRU LNGT Akdeniz. This contract will expand the collaboration between the two entities, which have successfully delivered seven units since 2018.

Project Details and Timeline

Work on the conversion of LNGT Akdeniz is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. This project is the ninth FSRU conversion that Karpowership has entrusted to Seatrium and is also the second project to be carried out under the 2025 memorandum of understanding. This memorandum includes three LNG tanker conversions and potential integration work for power plants.

Seatrium is responsible for engineering, conversion, integration, installation, and commissioning of the gas systems and support for this vessel. The final unit is designed to provide up to 600 million standard cubic feet per day of gas capacity.

Background of Collaboration and Achievements

This contract has been secured following the delivery and exit of LNGT Türkiye in September 2023, the last vessel in a seven-unit FSRU conversion program that began in 2018. Seatrium is also converting LNGT Karadeniz, which is the eighth collaborative project between the two entities and the first project under the new memorandum of understanding. The conversion work for this vessel will commence in the third quarter of 2026 at Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard workshop.

Gokhan Kucak, Karpowership's Technology Director, has stated that the successful delivery of LNGT Türkiye and the receipt of the LNGT Akdeniz contract are significant milestones in the continued growth of Karpowership's LNG-to-energy business. Since 2007, Seatrium has completed 22 FSRU and FSU conversion projects.

Seatrium has also indicated that the newly converted vessel will support LNG import capabilities and energy security in its ultimate target market, which has yet to be determined.
