GasEntec and Samsung Heavy Industries have pooled their resources to commercialize liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology on a small scale. The two companies have agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for licensing the SAMSUNG Enhanced Nitrogen Split Expansion (SENSE) liquefaction technology, with capacities ranging from 50,000 to 1 million tons per year. This MOU enables the two companies to pursue the first commercial license for SENSE.

Innovation in Liquefaction Technology

Brian Yoon, CEO of GasEntec, stated: "With the expansion of global LNG capacity, liquefaction technology has entered a new cycle of innovation and diversity. Our collaboration with Samsung Heavy Industries transfers their proven liquefaction technology to the small-scale sector, allowing us to integrate modular LNG systems globally for the first time." According to Yoon, this collaboration enables customers to access a unified platform that provides flexible solutions from liquefaction stages to final delivery.

Potential Applications of SENSE Technology

Samsung Heavy Industries has developed the SENSE technology to achieve higher efficiencies than standard liquefaction processes. This technology includes a gas expansion process that uses nitrogen and methane as single-component refrigerants, and the entire process operates in a gaseous state, enhancing stability and operational convenience. The aforementioned MOU includes licensing the SENSE technology for small-scale liquefaction, while Samsung Heavy Industries will continue to provide liquefaction technology for larger applications, including floating LNG projects.

GasEntec notes that small-scale LNG is an actively developing sector; as producers and industrial users seek to profit from stranded gases without the need for significant investment in large liquefaction processes. According to GasEntec's information, potential applications of SENSE at this scale include local LNG production for ports and maritime corridors, LNG distribution from local pipeline gases, monetizing stranded gas resources, and providing fuel for use in remote power plants, industrial facilities, or bunkering.
