The Russian fishing fleet is actively spying on and tracking undersea cables in the waters around Britain. Reports indicate that these activities began in 2021 and involve over 500 separate incidents in which the Russian fleet has maneuvered around communication cables connecting Britain to the United States and Europe.

Dimensions of Russian Fleet Activities

According to collected data, 17 Russian fishing vessels have participated in these operations. Analyses show that these vessels are precisely mapping the routes of the cables so that later, unmanned underwater vehicles can automatically damage these cables. This threat could include cutting the cables or placing coverings to disrupt their data flow.

Shortage of Royal Navy Resources

The Royal Navy of Britain is facing a shortage of resources to identify and monitor the activities of the Russian fleet. Currently, no operational submarines are available. Of the seven Astute-class submarines, HMS Achilles is still under construction, and three other submarines are non-operational at Faslane naval base. In this situation, the Navy has been forced to request assistance from a French Navy Rubis-class submarine to escort HMS Vanguard.

This situation highlights the urgent need to strengthen Britain's surveillance and defensive capabilities against potential threats. Given that many of the Russians' activities in British waters go undetected or are carried out without obstruction, this issue can be particularly dangerous during times of political tension.

Overall, the threat posed by these activities is serious and real, as cables may be cut in an unclear manner, which could disrupt vital communications during military tensions. Such covert attacks could effectively sever communications between essential services and data centers, and repairing them may take months.
