The tender launched by Red Eléctrica for this project specifies that the implementation of the agreement will initiate a six-month engineering phase for the high-voltage 132 kV cable connection between Mallorca and Menorca and will lay the groundwork for the future Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Installation (EPCI) contract.
Reducing Dependence on Fossil Fuels
According to Nexans, this project is the next step in developing electrical connectivity between the two islands and will empower Menorca to significantly reduce its dependence on electricity generation from fossil fuels. Additionally, Nexans will carry out engineering activities for a comprehensive cable system that includes underwater and underground components, leveraging its long-standing experience in delivering complex connectivity projects.
This project will also be based on the company's expertise in engineering, manufacturing, and installation, with special attention to environmental preservation throughout the planning and execution phases, reflecting the ecological sensitivity of the area.
The new connection is also based on the company's previous partnership with the existing electrical connection between Mallorca and Menorca and will further strengthen the long-term collaboration between the two companies.
Pascal Radue, Executive Vice President of the Power Transmission Division at Nexans, stated: "Nexans is proud to be selected by Red Eléctrica for this strategic project. The Mallorca-Menorca connection is an important infrastructure investment that will enhance the resilience of the network and support energy transmission in the Balearic Islands."
This agreement reflects the trust placed in Nexans' comprehensive capabilities and our track record in delivering sustainable and reliable electrical solutions.
The role of the main supplier for this project in the western Mediterranean has recently been assigned to Nexans following the commencement of production of high-voltage 525 kV (HVDC) underwater cables for the connection of the LanWin2 marine network.
