Nexans has commenced the production of high voltage 525 kV (HVDC) submarine cables for the LanWin2 offshore wind network connection in Germany. This phase marks the first industrial production of submarine cables using 525 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) technology, which is being carried out at Nexans' facility in Halden, Norway.

Contract Details and Project Dimensions

Nexans has secured a nearly 1 billion euro contract for the LanWin2 project in January 2025 under an agreement with TenneT that was signed in 2023. This contract includes engineering, supply, construction, and installation of approximately 250 kilometers of HVDC export cable systems onshore and offshore.

The production begins following the approval of Nexans' 525 kV HVDC XLPE submarine cable technology, transitioning the project from the technology qualification phase to full-scale production and delivery. The LanWin2 project is designed to transfer wind energy from the North Sea of Germany to the Heide area in Schleswig-Holstein state.

Conversion Platform and Project Timeline

This project also includes a marine conversion platform to be supplied by the Siemens Energy and Dragados Offshore consortium. The first steel cut for this platform is scheduled for September 2025. The LanWin2 project is expected to be operational by 2031.

Similar projects worldwide are underway to harness renewable energy resources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. LanWin2 is recognized as a successful example of collaboration between the private and public sectors in the field of renewable energy.
