The Houthis are in a difficult situation due to rapid advances and failure to maintain their new positions in the Bab al-Mandab Strait. These forces had managed to capture the Ras Manhali Peninsula and the Perim Island near the Bab al-Mandab Strait following recent advances. However, it now seems that these advances are facing serious threats due to airstrikes and the inability to secure supply lines.
Reasons for Advances and Houthi Challenges
The Houthis had been able to advance quickly along the coastal strip and the Tihama plain due to accurate information about the lack of cohesion in the Yemeni government forces (IRG). They effectively exploited the divisions among the various components of the IRG. However, it is now clear that this cohesion has not improved as much as previously thought, and the Houthis are heavily reliant on a supply line that is completely at risk.
The N2 coastal line extending north serves as the only supply line for the Houthis and is easily exposed to airstrikes due to the flat and open terrain. These attacks are likely carried out by Yemeni air forces, particularly the Saudi Air Force, which has been heavily involved in these conflicts in recent days.
Changes in Tactical Situation
The tactical situation in southwestern Yemen is changing rapidly, and Houthi forces in newly occupied areas are at risk. With the advance of IRG forces from the neighboring Lahij province, the Houthis are facing greater threats. The Southern Giants forces, displaying the flags of southern Yemen, are attacking the roads towards Dhubab, and there is currently no sign of the Houthis' continued presence on Perim Island or at the Ras Manhali port.
Traffic in the Bab al-Mandab Strait continues, but it seems that on September 14, this traffic decreased due to the new conditions and airstrikes. The IRG forces may change the situation with an effective counterattack and regain control of strategic areas. However, they have previously lost advanced units and equipment during their retreat, which could benefit the Houthis.
