Malta has taken an important step in updating its maritime services by launching the Digital Seaman’s Record Book. This book was launched by IDsure, a Danish company specializing in digital identity and verification, and has officially been in operation since September 23, 2026.

Transformation in Seafarer Registration

The seafarer registration book is provided digitally as an official document of seafarers' service throughout their careers, replacing previous physical versions. This change allows seafarers to access their records without the need for printing and physically sending documents. Seafarers can verify their identity using the IDsure app and receive their seafarer registration book directly in their digital wallet.

Benefits of the Digital System

This new system enables seafarers to record their maritime service in the digital book and send it for verification to the captain or other authorized officials. This process is carried out without the need for paper forms, stamps, and postal delays. IDsure is designed to ensure the security and validity of information using encrypted signatures and blockchain storage.

The Minister of Sustainable Transport of Malta, Chris Bonnet, stated at the launch ceremony of this system: "This initiative is part of the government's ongoing investment in modernizing Malta's maritime management. With these services, we make essential services more accessible and secure for those who depend on them, anywhere in the world."

Dr. Ivan Tabone, head of the registration of ships and seafarers, also added: "Seafarers should not have to rely on the physical delivery of an important professional document. The digital registration book provides them with direct and secure access to this document."

Additionally, this initiative helps IDsure strengthen its position as a digital infrastructure for flag states seeking to replace paper maritime documentation with secure and verifiable digital validation.

The CEO of IDsure, Jesper Holmgren, commented on this decision: "Malta's decision to issue the seafarer registration book exclusively in digital form sends a strong signal to the maritime industry. This means that the seafarer registration book is quickly sent to seafarers' phones and is always available to them."
