The new gas project launched on the shores of Libya is being executed by the National Oil Corporation of Libya (NOC) and Eni North Africa as part of a consortium under the name Mellitah Oil & Gas Libyan Branch. This project aims to stop the flaring of excess gas and recover hundreds of millions of cubic meters of gas to supply local power plants and export to Europe.

Project Details and Objectives

This project includes the construction and installation of the Bouri Gas Recovery Module (GRM) and related infrastructure that will allow for the recovery and processing of gases that were previously flared. This development is part of a broader strategy aimed at increasing the value of the country's gas resources and reducing the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions in upstream activities.

According to Eni, this project is one of the most important initiatives to reduce pollutant emissions in Libya's energy sector and will help improve the environmental performance of the country's production system. It is expected that this project alone will lead to a reduction of about 1.5 million tons of CO2 in greenhouse gas emissions annually.

Gas Supply for Domestic Market and Export

The recovered gas will be supplied to the domestic market and will provide additional production of approximately 700 million standard cubic meters per year, which will help meet the needs of the electricity generation sector. Furthermore, this project will support additional gas volumes for export to Europe through the GreenStream pipeline.

The gas recovery module relocation operations for BGUP were completed earlier this year by Saipem. Pre-commissioning activities for approximately 28 kilometers of previously installed subsea pipelines are planned to connect the DP3, DP4, and Sabratha platforms and facilitate the transportation of recovered gas to the Mellitah processing complex.

Other strategic developments are currently underway in Libya, including the A&E Structures project, which focuses on bringing new offshore gas resources into flow for the domestic market and export. Additionally, these projects will help optimize and enhance gas production and transportation infrastructure.
