Iran appreciated the principled positions of Russia and China in the United Nations Security Council regarding the non-extension of the mission of the panel of experts monitoring sanctions against this country. This decision was made following the veto by Russia and China in the recent Security Council meeting and signifies the end of the examination of Iran's nuclear issue in this council.
Background of the Security Council Meeting
In the Security Council meeting on Thursday, a draft resolution presented by the United States to extend the activities of the "panel of experts" that assisted the Iran sanctions committee (known as Committee 1737) was reviewed. This draft received 11 votes in favor and two abstentions, but was rejected due to the negative votes of Russia and China, which are two permanent members of the Security Council. Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations also praised Somalia and Pakistan for their valuable positions and abstention votes.

Consequences of Not Extending the Panel of Experts' Mission
Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran and the country's chief negotiator during the Islamabad agreement, stated: "The unipolar order in which one side was coercively gaining concessions has come to an end. The veto by China and Russia rejected the political exploitation of the Security Council and reaffirmed the rule of law." He also emphasized the importance of defending multilateralism and said: "Multilateralism serves no one's interests."
These developments indicate a change in the international political structure and a reduction in the influence of Western powers over the decisions of the Security Council. Given that Resolution 2231 expired on October 18, 2025, the Security Council has announced that there is no longer a legal basis for examining Iran's nuclear issue. This change could lead to increased independence for Iran in international policies and a reduction in sanction pressures.
