Indonesian police have officially begun an investigation into the captain of the Virgo Transport 8. This ship sank last month in the Java Sea, resulting in the loss of dozens of lives. The Virgo Transport 8 became the focus of attention on September 30, 18 days after the search operation began, due to its sinking.

Details of the Incident and Search

On September 30, diving and coastal teams recovered four more bodies from the sunken ship, bringing the confirmed death toll to 78. Many of the bodies were retrieved under difficult conditions from inside the ship's hull, including five bodies found on September 29 (the seventeenth day of the search). Currently, 57 people remain missing, and efforts to locate them continue.

Investigations and Responsibilities

The local police in South Kalimantan initially handled this case, and now the responsibility for the investigation has been transferred to the National Water Police Department. This investigation is in its preliminary stage and includes interviews and a reconstruction of the sequence of events. The police are examining whether anyone has legal responsibility for this incident. The condition of the recovered bodies is deteriorating, making the search operation more challenging.

The sunken ship is positioned upside down, creating a confusing environment for divers. Additionally, strong currents at the sinking site pose inherent dangers for diving. The investigation continues, and this incident is recognized as one of the deadliest maritime disasters in the region's history.
