Golar LNG, the owner and operator of midstream liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure based in Bermuda, has accelerated its activities in the floating LNG (FLNG) market by purchasing the Grace Dahlia tanker from NYK Line.

Tanker Purchase Details

Golar LNG has agreed to purchase the Grace Dahlia tanker, which was built in 2013, from NYK Line. The goal of this purchase is to convert the tanker into the company's fourth FLNG unit. As part of this project, the tanker has been ordered for delivery on August 12, 2026, and is expected to be delivered from CIMC Raffles shipyard in China in 2029.

Benefits of the New FLNG Unit

The Grace Dahlia tanker has a storage capacity of 177,427 cubic meters (cbm), which is 20% larger than the storage capacity of the Esperanza FLNG unit, which is currently under construction. This increased storage capacity allows FLNG customers more flexibility in loading while maintaining the benefits of the MKII design for Golar.

The new FLNG unit will be converted alongside the Esperanza FLNG unit at the Yantai shipyard in China. Delivery of this new unit is anticipated in 2029 and is considered the earliest FLNG capacity in the world.

Economic and Industrial Implications

Given the growing demand for LNG in the global market, this action by Golar LNG could strengthen the company's position in the floating LNG industry and increase flexibility in providing services to customers. Additionally, this development could help attract new customers and recoup investments made.

Overall, the purchase of the Grace Dahlia tanker and its conversion into the fourth FLNG unit underscores the importance and role of Golar LNG in the global LNG market and could lead to further growth and development of the company in the future.
