Gas prices in Europe reach highest level in four years

Gas prices in European markets have reached their highest level in nearly four years. This price increase has occurred due to the existing tensions between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky and its effects on the Russian diesel market. It is expected that this price increase, especially on the eve of the cold winter season, will bring more challenges for consumers.

Details of the gas price increase

The futures price of gas in the Dutch market (TTF) has reached €87.20 per megawatt-hour, marking an increase for the sixth consecutive day. This price is the highest since before the start of the US and Israel's war against Iran in late February. Ole Hansen, head of commodity strategy at Saxo Bank, noted that the low level of gas reserves at the beginning of the peak winter demand season has left Europe vulnerable to high prices.

Challenges of the winter season

Given forecasts of temperature drops across Central Europe, demand for gas is expected to rise, especially this month. This impending cold wave is expected to coincide with a decrease in electricity production from wind turbines. Currently, Europe's gas reserves are less than 74% of storage capacity, which is significantly below the usual level of around 90% for this time of year.

The European heating season officially began on October 1, and the potential competition between Asia and Europe for liquefied natural gas (LNG) resources throughout the winter has driven prices up. Tamas Varga, an analyst at PVM Oil Associates, has predicted that while a gas shortage in Europe is not expected, prices are likely to remain high.

Additionally, reports indicate that the futures price of natural gas for November at the TTF hub in the Netherlands has risen to about $1,003 per 1,000 cubic meters. Cash prices for gas are also currently above $1,000 per 1,000 cubic meters. This price increase reflects the challenges ahead for households and industries in Europe in facing high prices next year.
