The presence of France's Atlantic 2 maritime patrol aircraft, which was transferred to Romania to enhance surveillance in the Black Sea, will be extended for several more weeks. This decision comes in response to a series of deadly attacks on commercial vessels in the region.

Attacks on Ships and Maritime Security Situation

In October, at least nine cargo ships near the coasts of Romania and Bulgaria were attacked, resulting in the death or disappearance of 34 sailors. These attacks reflect rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine and serious challenges for NATO in the Black Sea. The Black Sea, which is vital for the transport of grain, oil, and petroleum products, is recognized as a sensitive area for neighboring countries, including Romania and Bulgaria.

Performance of the Atlantic 2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft

The Atlantic 2 aircraft has been transferred to Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania to identify and monitor maritime threats, including submarines and military vessels. The commander of this aircraft stated that its presence will continue for several more weeks, with the primary goal of ensuring navigational safety in the Black Sea. This aircraft is capable of identifying maritime threats but cannot engage them directly.

On October 28, the Atlantic 2 aircraft was able to identify three maritime drones that attacked the container ship Contship Jet. This ship, which was under the Liberian flag, sank in Bulgaria's exclusive economic waters. The commander of the aircraft reported that prior to the attack, Bulgarian authorities and the ship's crew were alerted to the danger and managed to save their lives.

NATO recently announced that it will invest over 40 billion dollars in the next five years to enhance counter-drone capabilities. This investment reflects NATO's commitment to defending its member countries, including those bordering the Black Sea.
