Fincantieri has started updating and developing its shipbuilding in the state of Wisconsin with a $10 million allocation from funding by the United States Navy and the Maritime Administration (MARAD). This investment includes $8.3 million to enhance the Navy's shipbuilding capabilities and $1.3 million as a small grant to shipbuilders from MARAD.
Investment Details and Objectives
Fincantieri has stated that this investment is part of its ongoing efforts to modernize and expand shipbuilding in the United States. The company, which began its operations in the United States two decades ago, has invested over $800 million in its shipyards in this country. These shipyards include three shipyards in Wisconsin and a maintenance center in Jacksonville, Florida.

Impact on Workforce and Advanced Technology
George Mutafis, CEO of Fincantieri Marine Group, stated: "This investment represents the Navy's confidence in Fincantieri and our ability to strengthen American shipbuilding." The company aims to enhance its productivity by employing advanced manufacturing technologies and to strengthen its shipbuilding capabilities for current and future programs.
The new funding allows Fincantieri to continue its employee training programs until 2027. This program includes an annual tax-free payment of $5,000 to help with childcare and eldercare costs.
In addition to federal funding, Tony Evers, the Governor of Wisconsin, recently announced state support that includes $232,788 for training Fincantieri employees in working with advanced robotic welding systems.
Previous Navy funding has contributed to the development of a new welding laboratory at Fincantieri Marinette Marine, which will help create more training opportunities and enhance the skills of shipbuilding workers. This facility will also serve as a model for skill development in Fincantieri's Wisconsin shipyards.
