The Director General of Ilam Customs, Sohrab Kamari, reported a 453 million dollar export from Mehran border in the first 6 months of the current year. The international Mehran border, being the closest land passage of Iran to Baghdad and the holy shrines, not only has a strategic position for the movement of pilgrims but is also considered one of the most important routes for exporting goods to Iraq and regional markets.
Export Potential of Mehran Border
Mehran border is located 95 kilometers southwest of Ilam and 230 kilometers from Baghdad, and due to its proximity to Wasit province in Iraq and suitable access to the market of this country, it plays a significant role in Iran's foreign trade. According to statistics, last year, more than 2 million and 384 thousand tons of goods worth 1 billion and 318 million dollars passed through this border. Economic experts believe that if full utilization and removal of infrastructural limitations are achieved, this capacity could increase exports to about 10 billion dollars per year.
Infrastructure Development and Export Increase
Sohrab Kamari further added: Goods exported from Mehran border are sent not only to Iraq but also to the markets of Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Syria. This export range indicates that Mehran's importance is not limited to border exchanges with Iraq, and this passage can become a platform for expanding the presence of Iranian goods in diverse regional markets.
The Director General of Ilam Customs emphasized the current status of trade exchanges at Mehran border, stating: Currently, there are no obstacles to the export of goods from this border, and customs processes are ongoing. The availability of conditions for conducting exports can provide opportunities for more traders to operate and increase the volume of exchanges in the coming months. However, the continuity of this trend and the maximum utilization of Mehran's trade capacity requires appropriate border infrastructure corresponding to the volume of exchanges.
Kamari stressed: The more border facilities are developed in line with the volume of exchanges, the smoother the trade process will be, and responses to exporters will be made more quickly. Therefore, strengthening border infrastructure should be prioritized in the province's economic development programs.
Mehran border, with its suitable geographical position and the possibility of commercial connections with other Arab countries, has significant potential for export development. Realizing this potential can enhance Ilam's position in the country's foreign trade.
