The Panama Canal has officially announced that it is developing its long-term transit reservation program for the Panamax locks. This program for the first time allows commercial ships to secure their transit months before the start of the dry season in 2027. This change in conditions helps shipowners plan more accurately.

Details of the Transit Reservation Program

According to officials from the Panama Canal, the new phase of the Long-Term Allocation Program (LoTSA) will include transit from January 3 to April 3, 2027. This program will continue in the Neopanamax locks and a new pilot program for long-term allocation for ships using the Panamax locks will be introduced.

The LoTSA program allows shipping companies to have greater assurance of transiting the canal with early reservations, thus avoiding last-minute access restrictions and prices. In the Neopanamax program, 36 packages including 270 transit slots will be available, comprising 165 northbound transits and 105 southbound transits. Similarly, the Panamax program will offer 51 packages including 288 transit slots, consisting of 147 northbound transits and 141 southbound transits.

Impacts and Future Outlook

The development of this program comes as the Panama Canal is changing its operational model due to severe drought conditions that have caused daily transit restrictions in 2023 and 2024. Despite improvements in water levels and transit capacity, the canal is increasingly focusing on providing predictable reservation options. These measures not only help improve conditions for shipowners but also assist in securing the water needed for the canal.

With water and transit capacity currently improved, the LoTSA program allows shipowners and operators to plan with greater confidence. This program also enables more ships from the commercial fleet to benefit from this option, thereby contributing to the development of trade in the region.
