HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has initiated a project to develop the largest ethane carrier concept in the transportation market. This project is a collaboration between HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, GTT, and Lloyd’s Register, aimed at assessing the challenges of scaling ethane carriers to a capacity of 150,000 cubic meters.
Design and Safety Challenges in Ethane Carriers
This project focuses on various aspects of ship design, integration of maintenance systems, safety, operational capability, and compliance with classification requirements and regulations. Given the rapid growth of ethane exports from the United States and the increasing demand for petrochemicals in Asia, the development of larger vessels capable of carrying more cargo on each trip has become a priority for shipowners and builders.

Growing Trend of Ethane Transportation
Ethane transportation has significantly increased in recent years. This growth is driven by rising exports from the United States and the ever-growing needs of petrochemical industries in Asia. The new project by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries aligns with this trend, aiming to create vessels with greater capacity that can enhance supply chain efficiency.
Considering the existing challenges in design and safety, the development of larger ethane carriers requires close collaboration among designers, builders, and regulatory bodies. This project could help establish new standards in the ethane transportation industry and create new opportunities for investors and companies operating in this field.
