Berg Propulsion is set to launch a new office in Mumbai to expand its global network and increase its presence in shipbuilding projects in India. This office is scheduled to open on January 1, 2027, and will serve as a communication hub for Berg's activities in India.
Details of the New Office Opening
Berg Propulsion will establish this office with the aim of strengthening its relationships with leading shipyards such as Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), and Chowgule Shipyard. Amrita Singh, Berg Propulsion's account manager for new sales, will oversee the office. She will collaborate with Prasannit Roy, who previously commanded in the Indian Navy and was the commercial shipbuilding planning manager at GRSE. Roy's experience in equipment facilities will also assist in quality assurance services.
New Goals and Strategies
Singh and Roy have previously collaborated successfully in supplying Berg Propulsion packages for two electric vessels measuring 33.55 meters, currently under construction at KMEW's facilities in Mumbai. Singh stated, "Our focus is on identifying and supporting projects that create added value through Berg solutions, enhance efficiency, and reduce emissions." She added, "By closely collaborating with customers and factory partners, we expect to align our systems, services, and support with the opportunities available in this growing market."
Prasannit Roy also commented on the attractive state of the propulsion sector in India, saying, "There are significant expansion plans in the Navy and Coast Guard, and opportunities for controllable pitch propeller (CPP) systems that Berg offers are at the heart of almost every platform."
Indian shipyards are also focusing on green propulsion opportunities, particularly interested in hybrid configurations, variable drives, and CPP systems. Roy emphasized, "Proximity in this market is crucial, where we will see efficiency transition as a minimum requirement over the next five years."
Given the strong private sector investment and government support for priority sustainability projects, Berg intends to increase its presence in India in the tugboat, dredging, and OSV construction sectors. Singh also mentioned establishing a network of trained service representatives in Mumbai, Cochin, and Visakhapatnam, where most of their customers' vessels operate.
She added, "We will focus on attracting skilled local talent and implementing training programs to build long-term expertise for better service delivery to customers across India." There is also potential to support customers in other South Asian countries, such as Sri Lanka.
