China's Henghui Shipping has recently signed a contract to build up to four multi-purpose cargo ships with a capacity of 38,000 tons at Shanghai Port Machinery (ZPMC). This move is part of ZPMC's efforts to enter the specialized project cargo ship market.
Contract Details and Ship Features
The contract includes two firm vessels and two options for order, with details on pricing and delivery dates yet to be released due to market conditions. The ships will be equipped with three cranes with a capacity of 250 tons each, bringing their total loading capacity to 500 tons.

Additionally, the vessels will feature two long-term cargo holds, the largest of which measures 76.8 meters in length and is designed for transporting large machinery and project cargo. The design of the ships includes features such as special propellers, wave-matching ducts, and a high-voltage shore power system, which also includes hull optimization aimed at reducing fuel consumption.
ZPMC's Background in the Cargo Shipbuilding Industry
ZPMC entered the multi-purpose cargo shipbuilding market only two years ago. The company's first order came from the Chinese-Polish operator Chipolbrok in August 2021 for two firm vessels and two optional vessels with similar capacity. These ships are also equipped with three cranes with a capacity of 250 tons.
Since the start of this project, ZPMC has moved Chipolbrok's program into the construction phase, while the Chinese-Polish owner has separately continued to expand its heavy lift fleet with larger vessels at other Chinese factories. This development reflects the growing demand for project cargo ships in the global market, particularly evident in the industrial and large infrastructure sectors.
Implications and Future Outlook
Henghui's entry into multi-purpose cargo ship contracts could have significant impacts on the global shipping and transportation market. Given the technical features and high capacity of these vessels, they are expected to play an important role in large industrial and infrastructure projects.
Moreover, in light of the growing needs for heavy and project cargo transportation, this contract represents an effective step in developing the capabilities of Chinese companies in this sector. Therefore, monitoring market trends and future developments in this area will be of particular importance.
