China, with the commencement of the construction of the first trench support vessel from two Asso.subsea vessels, namely Avra, is seeking to enhance its maritime technologies and capabilities in this field. This initiative took place on September 23, with a steel cutting ceremony held at the China Merchants Heavy Industry (CMHI) shipyard in Shenzhen.
Technical Details of the Avra Vessel
The Avra vessel, introduced as the strongest trench support vessel ever built, is designed with a power of 24 megawatts and a towing capacity of over 180 tons. This vessel also has the capability to operate with a 4000-ton under-deck cable carousel and two working decks. These features enable this vessel to be utilized in various projects, including the expansion of dynamic cables, installation of floating wind farms, and internal and export cable operations.
The Role of the Avra Vessel in the Future of Marine Energy
The Avra vessel is designed to utilize methanol and biofuels and is equipped with a hybrid battery system. This vessel also features cold-ironing capabilities and a 150-ton marine/subsea crane along with two heavy A-frames. The Avra vessel is expected to be delivered to the customer by the end of 2027.
In March 2023, Asso.subsea partners signed a contract for the construction of a second vessel named Andromeda, which will be a sister ship to the Avra. This vessel is also designed as a trench support vessel and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2028.
Given the recent changes in the maritime industry and the need for innovative technologies, the construction of these vessels can significantly enhance quality and efficiency in maritime projects. Additionally, these vessels are considered examples of China's technological advancements in the field of navigation.
