Carlova Maritime, led by Anthony Iglesias, has entered into a new agreement to order two Aframax tankers with a capacity of 114,000 dWT from Imabari. This contract is considered the first newbuilding contract for the Greek company in Japan after separating from Samos Steamship.
Contract Details and Delivery Timeline
According to available information, the vessels are scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter of 2029 and the first quarter of 2030. Contract prices have not yet been announced. Shipbuilding sources in Japan have reported that Imabari and Japan Shipbuilding will collaborate on this project, with part of the hull construction taking place at the Yokosuka facilities owned by Sumitomo Heavy Industries.
Construction and Supply Strategies
In this project, Imabari has opted to supply large "mega" blocks instead of standard hull sections. This strategic approach signifies a return to familiar territory for Iglesias's maritime interests. The Carlova commercial fleet continues to be significantly composed of ships built in Japan, including the Aframax tanker Phaedra built in 2025 and the tanker Penelope built in 2023 by Sumitomo.
With the addition of these two Imabari tankers, Carlova's total registered orders will increase to six vessels, which include two VLCCs from Hanwha Ocean, one Aframax and one Suezmax from Hengli, and two new Aframax tankers from Imabari. This increase in the fleet reflects Carlova's desire to expand and strengthen its position in the international oil and shipping market.
