Seatrium, a marine engineering group based in Singapore, has signed an important contract with Karpowership for the conversion and integration of five hydrogen power ships. This contract includes third-generation Whale Class ships designed by Karpowership.

Contract Details and Implementation Stages

Seatrium will be responsible for carrying out major conversion work, integrating equipment, mechanical completion, and pre-commissioning of these ships. Engineering activities are currently underway, and the first ship is expected to arrive at Seatrium's workshop on Tuas Boulevard in Singapore in December 2027. The financial details of this contract have not yet been disclosed.

Features of Whale Class Ships

Whale Class ships are the largest design of power ships by Karpowership, capable of generating up to 600 megawatts of electricity per ship. These ships will be equipped with hydrogen multi-fuel power generation systems and internal infrastructure stations, allowing them to connect directly to national power grids. Karpowership has stated that these ships can supply electricity within 30 days of deployment.

This contract follows the signing of a letter of intent in August 2025 for the conversion of three FSRU units and the potential integration of up to six new generation ships. The collaboration between these two companies began in 2018, and Seatrium has so far completed seven FSRU conversion projects for Karpowership.

The Singaporean group also secured the eighth and ninth FSRU conversion projects earlier this year. These collaborations represent the growth and development of innovative technologies in the field of renewable energy and electricity generation from various sources.
