The cargo ship Västerbotten, weighing 6,800 tons and owned by a German company, was temporarily detained by Russian authorities from September 30 to October 1, 2026. The ship, which was traveling from the port of Munsterai in Sweden to the port of Silamäe in Estonia, was stopped for inspection. Confirmation has been provided by the Estonian police and border guard regarding this matter.

Details of the Detention

The Västerbotten, built in 2008 and registered in Cyprus, was approaching Russian waters at the time of detention. Its route indicated sudden changes in the ship's direction, likely due to inspection by Russian authorities. The ship was navigating in an international corridor agreed upon by Russia, Estonia, and Finland.

Estonian transport authorities stated that no explanation has been provided by Russian authorities regarding the reason for the ship's detention, and they can only speculate about the possible reasons for this action. According to officials, the ship was stopped for inspection due to its proximity to the Estonia-Russia border.

Consequences and Background

This incident marks the first known case of ship detentions by Russia in this area since 2025. In May 2025, a tanker named Green Admire, registered under the Liberian flag, was briefly detained by Russia for similar violations and then released. Previously, in April 2025, Estonia had also detained an unflagged tanker named Kiwala for safety violations for two weeks.

The development of these incidents in maritime borders could lead to increased tensions between countries. Estonian authorities have advised ships to avoid routes within Russian waters since the onset of the Ukraine war in 2022. This action has been taken to ensure maritime security and prevent potential conflicts.

After the detention, the Västerbotten resumed its journey and is currently approaching the port of Silamäe.
