BlueNewables, together with Naturgy, has completed the installation of two 500-kilowatt floating solar platforms at the Port of Valencia, thus marking the start of the testing phase for Spain's first pre-commercial marine solar project. This project seeks to validate the technology's performance in real marine conditions and analyze aspects related to performance, maintenance, and integration in the port environment.

Project Details and Objectives

With the installation of the second unit, the engineering consultancy based in Spain, with support from Naturgy, has completed the deployment of this project and has now entered the testing phase. The goal of this project is to gather information about the performance of this technology in a real marine environment and to collect results and lessons learned during the operation. BlueNewables has noted that this project is part of the Port of Valencia's strategy to advance towards a more sustainable and innovative port model.

PV-bos Platforms and Their Impact

The two PV-bos platforms, built at the San Enrique shipyard in Vigo, have been named Piporta and Kataruja, referring to the two cities in Valencia that were most affected by the DANA storm in 2024. This project is envisioned as a demonstration environment for marine renewable technologies and is funded by IDAE with support from the European Union.

The company emphasized that PV-bos expands the application areas of solar energy to locations where land is limited or very expensive. The solution developed by BlueNewables is designed to be modular, scalable, and industrialized, easily adaptable to various locations and project models.

This approach brings energy production closer to consumption points and provides new levels for clean energy generation without competing for land.

BlueNewables and Naturgy will collaborate for two years on the exchange of technical, operational, strategic, and economic information resulting from the project development. This exchange will include the analysis of performance data, technical incidents, costs, and lessons learned to assess the potential of this technology.

The Spanish company has emphasized that floating marine solar energy creates new opportunities for expanding the use of renewable resources in the marine environment. Its complementary potential with other technologies, especially offshore wind energy, as well as its applications in ports, islands, and coastal infrastructure, make this technology one of the promising solutions for advancing carbon reduction in the energy system.
