Birdon, an Australian marine engineering company, has begun production of the first "batch" of unmanned surface vehicles (MUSV) for the anticipated United States Navy program. This project is producing a vehicle every two months at a remarkable pace.

Selection of Companies and Strategic Partnerships

The United States Navy has selected seven different companies to compete in this program after several changes in its MUSV procurement strategy, including Sea Machines, Leidos, Saronic Technologies, Galliano Marine Services, PacMar Technologies, Birdon, and Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII). Many of these companies are collaborating with other entities.

Birdon is collaborating with Mythos AI, based in Florida, for unmanned systems technology. Additionally, Birdon has agreed with C&C Marine shipyard in the New Orleans area for vehicle construction. This yard, as a modern facility with high automation, has the necessary capabilities for fast and efficient production.

Need for Rapid Prototyping

The selection of a reputable shipyard has been intentionally made to meet the Navy's needs for rapid prototyping and delivery. C&C Marine has been involved in the construction and repair of marine vehicles for nearly three decades, focusing on project timelines and costs. This yard has previously collaborated with Birdon on earlier projects, including the construction of a prototype 150-foot vehicle for military logistics.

Birdon has prioritized C&C's immediate production capabilities in its programs. Kevin Mooney, President of Birdon, stated: "The start of construction moves this effort from the planning stage to execution. It reflects our confidence in delivery based on existing capabilities – not future promises. We are combining production-ready engineering with a reputable manufacturer."
