Saildrone announced today that the first four unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) of the company have successfully registered under the Danish flag. This action marks the first time that unmanned saildrones will operate under a national flag and helps create a clear legal framework for the international operations of these vehicles.
Legal Framework for Saildrones
The registration of these vehicles was carried out in collaboration with Saildrone and the Danish Maritime Authority and has led to the establishment of a necessary legal framework for the registration and operation of saildrones under the Danish flag. Brian Adrian Vessel, Director General of the Danish Maritime Authority, stated: "This action demonstrates that Denmark, as a leading maritime nation, not only has the willingness but also the capability to manage and endorse future maritime technologies."

Expanding Operations in Europe
For Saildrone, the registration under the Danish flag provides a legal basis for further expansion across Europe and supports a growing fleet and deeper integration with European customers. Kim Loe Sorensen, Head of Business Development for Saildrone Europe, stated: "Operating under the Danish flag is a significant milestone in expanding our activities in Europe, and we are proud to represent the Danish flag at sea."
Saildrone's unmanned vehicles are designed for high-endurance operations in the open ocean. Their missions include maritime domain awareness, border crime detection, illegal immigration, and threats to critical infrastructure, as well as hydrographic surveys and environmental monitoring in some of the world's most challenging marine environments.

Saildrone plans to continue working closely with the Danish Maritime Authority to expand its fleet under the Danish flag, aiming for various platforms, including Voyager, Surveyor, and Spectre, to operate under the Danish flag.
