Anduril, a defense technology company, announced its plans on Tuesday to build a $3.7 billion factory in Maryland, which is expected to create 3,100 jobs. The event was attended by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Investment and Contract Details
The new factory will be located in Sparrows Point, Maryland, near the Port of Baltimore, and is set to produce components for the U.S. Navy's Virginia-class submarines. Anduril's investment and the related contract, totaling $6.6 billion, are part of broader U.S. and allied efforts to expand weapon production following Russia's invasion of Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East.

Trump's Role and Local Support
The local government of Maryland and Baltimore County have also committed to providing 13 percent of Anduril's total investment, amounting to $481 million, which requires approval from local legislative bodies. Trump stated at the event: "Here in Sparrows Point, you will build the next generation of American submarines."
He also referred to a 40 percent tax contribution for this factory, although he did not provide details about the ownership mechanism. The United States currently has four shipbuilding yards that focus primarily on the maintenance of existing ships.
Future of the Factory and Productions
This project places Trump in an unusual alignment with Wes Moore, the Democratic Governor of Maryland, who is seen as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election. The new factory, known as Arsenal-2, is expected to be operational by the end of this decade.
Anduril is also building another facility in California to produce components for Virginia-class submarines and plans to manufacture larger modules and hull sections of submarines after the Baltimore factory becomes operational.
Virginia-class submarines, which can operate at speeds exceeding 25 knots, are the latest generation of the U.S. Navy's nuclear submarines designed for anti-submarine operations, land attacks, and surveillance missions.
