Allseas, a contractor based in Switzerland, has finalized a collaboration contract with the energy and marine consulting company ABL to support the decommissioning operations of the Statfjord A oil platform in the North Sea. This project is planned for the decommissioning of the Gravitas concrete production platform in Norway, and it is expected that the Statfjord A platform will be completely removed in a single-lift operation.
Details of the Statfjord A Decommissioning Project
The contract has been awarded to provide marine warranty surveyor services to ABL. The company will use the Pioneering Spirit vessel to carry out the lifting operations of the Statfjord A platform. This vessel has made upgrades to its lifting system to increase its lifting capacity from 48,000 tons to 60,000 tons. This change in capacity is critical for the success of this project.

Challenges and Safety Requirements
Subbi Nookala, country manager of ABL in Norway, noted the technical and operational challenges of this project, stating: "We are pleased to continue our long-term collaboration with Allseas in Norway and support the safe execution of this important lifting operation." This project requires careful planning and adherence to safety requirements due to its large scale and technical complexities. ABL will strive to minimize existing risks based on its experiences in large North Sea projects.
This project is part of an existing framework contract between ABL and Allseas in Norway and demonstrates ABL's credibility and extensive experience in large North Sea projects. Allseas is also engaged in several other decommissioning projects in the North Sea, one of which includes the recent removal of the North Cormorant platform weighing 17,200 tons.
The decommissioning operation of the Statfjord A platform, recognized as a historical asset, is expected to begin in the near future and is anticipated to have significant impacts on the marine and energy industry in Norway.
