The Aframax Rio tanker caught fire on Tuesday near Sochi, Russia, due to an attack by unmanned ships. This incident resulted in a large fire and an oil spill into the sea. All 23 crew members of the tanker, who were Indian nationals, were rescued and no injuries have been reported.

Details of the Incident and Its Consequences

The Russian Ministry of Transport announced that the tanker, registered under the Liberian flag, caught fire due to an attack leading to an oil spill into the sea. Images released from the coast show a large column of black smoke resulting from the fire and burning oil on the water. Local authorities have temporarily closed the beaches around Sirius and advised residents to limit their time outdoors to monitor air and water quality.

Increased Maritime Threats in the Black Sea

This attack comes as maritime security experts warn that threats against commercial vessels are significantly increasing in the western Black Sea. In the past 24 hours, three commercial vessels have been attacked in the exclusive economic zones of Romania and Bulgaria, two of which sank. All these vessels were trading to or from Danube River ports. Experts attribute these attacks to Russian forces and state that these incidents represent a "material escalation" in maritime security, as commercial vessels are now exposed to kinetic activities within the EEZs of the two NATO countries.

Reports indicate that in recent days, attack patterns against commercial vessels have increased, particularly in areas close to Danube ports, with attacks sharply rising. In this context, the loading share at Danube ports has increased from about 10% in the first half of the year to 74% in August. This change has significantly risen due to repeated attacks on the ports of Odessa, Chernomorsk, and Pivdennyi.

Security experts also noted that since July, at least nine commercial vessels have been attacked near the entrances to the Danube, five of which were in Romanian waters. This includes an attack on a grain ship on October 5 that resulted in the deaths of two crew members.
