A cocaine trafficking suspect lost his life during a maritime chase off the coast of Portugal, and two others were injured. The incident took place on Sunday about 80 nautical miles south of Faro. The speedboat, which had previously been under surveillance by authorities, attempted to evade the police.

Details of the Chase and Collision

The Portuguese judicial police reported that the boat, with three crew members, was using quad engines with 1400 horsepower to escape. During the chase, the boat collided with a pursuing vessel, resulting in one of the suspects being injured. This suspect was airlifted to the hospital but ultimately lost his life during transport to the hospital.

Trafficking Themes and Their Impacts

In this operation, 3.7 tons of cocaine were discovered on site. The remaining two suspects were also arrested and transported to the coast of Portugal for trial. Cocaine trafficking in Europe is significantly increasing, with Portugal and Spain recognized as important transit countries. Traffickers quickly respond to legal pressures and shift to routes that are less monitored and more profitable.

This reality highlights the challenges in combating drug trafficking and the rapid changes in traffickers' methods. Given the increasing legal pressures in Central America and strengthened monitoring at European ports, traffickers have turned to smuggling networks along the southwestern coast of Spain. These changes have led to increased availability, price, and purity of cocaine at the street level in Europe.
