Wildcat Defense, which has recently been established by an investment manager based in Florida, has announced an agreement to purchase Fraser Industries located in Wisconsin as part of its planning to enter the shipbuilding industry and invest in the defense sector. This company, which is part of Wildcat Equity Partners, plans to invest in the operations of Fraser Industries after the acquisition is completed.
Details of the Acquisition and Future Investments
The operations of Fraser Industries include Fraser Shipyard, based in Superior, Wisconsin, which has been engaged in building and maintaining ships on the Great Lakes and for the military since 1888. The company also includes Lake Assault Boats, Northern Engineering, and Fraser Terminal. Wildcat Defense has stated that the company will remain under its current management and expects to invest $350 million in the factory to enhance the Faster workforce and expand production space.
The investment manager of Wildcat has pointed to emerging opportunities and stated that the United States needs such investments to modernize its shipbuilding infrastructure. The group has recently formed Wildcat Defense and has officially announced that it will focus on acquiring, investing in, and managing strategic companies in the U.S. defense sector.
Strategy and Long-term Goals
Eric Nicoladis, the head of the group and CEO of Wildcat Equity Partners, stated: "The United States cannot rebuild its defense industrial base without revitalizing its companies and workforce. This requires more than investment; it needs American ownership with operational expertise and a willingness to invest for decades, not just until the next exit."
While announcing the agreement to purchase Fraser, Nicoladis said: "We believe that this modernization and expansion must be carried out by American companies to improve and expand U.S. shipbuilding."
Fraser Industries has stated that under Wildcat's ownership, it will continue its existing collaborations, including with Fincantieri and Donjon shipyard, to compete in Navy contracts. At the same time, Wildcat has announced that it will act as an accelerator for Fraser's ongoing efforts in seeking collaboration opportunities with leading technology providers.
Patrick Kelly, co-owner and CEO of Fraser, has also stated: "We are ready to transfer the successful revitalization efforts made at Fraser to a broader Wildcat platform that will help advance shipbuilding and repairs in the United States."
In September, Wildcat made a non-binding offer to acquire the U.S. operations of Austal. This offer is estimated to value Austal USA at around $1.25 to $1.35 billion and could potentially lead to a bidding war with Hanwha USA, which is also seeking Austal USA.
