Trafigura announced on September 21, 2026, the launch of Volare Shipping as an operator for very large crude carriers (VLCCs). This initiative comes as the crude tanker market is experiencing a significant boom, and Volare provides a favorable position for further growth in the maritime transport sector.

Details of the Volare Fleet

Trafigura stated that it has established one of the largest maritime transport operations in the world, currently managing around 500 vessels across various sectors, of which approximately 250 are tankers. This operation conducts about 5,250 voyages annually across all maritime transport sectors.

Volare is recognized as the owner of Trafigura's current VLCC construction program and will initially have a fleet consisting of six very large tankers with a capacity of 318,000 deadweight tons (dwt) and eight newbuilding orders to be delivered between May 2027 and October 2028. Once the fleet is complete, its total capacity will reach approximately 4.4 million deadweight tons, making it one of the youngest and most advanced fleets in the public VLCC sector.

Investment Opportunities and Market Impacts

Trafigura emphasizes that the new tankers will be built in China and assures that these vessels are ready for dual fuel use and are larger than standard tankers. These ships can carry larger volumes of cargo and are also equipped with additional internal systems for insulation and heating of the tanks, allowing for the transport of various types of cargo.

Andrea Olivi, Global Head of Shipping at Trafigura and Chairman of the Board of Volare, stated: "Trafigura's expansion in the VLCC sector represents a clear opportunity for further investment in a modern fleet. Long-term fundamental principles in crude oil transportation remain supportive, and the establishment of a dedicated public company allows Volare investors direct access to this sector."

In connection with the launch of the new company, Trafigura has utilized Clarkson Securities and Fearnley Securities for a private placement. The company is expected to raise at least $500 million through this offering. Volare also intends to apply for listing on Euronext Growth Oslo, with trading expected to commence on October 5.
